Open Question: Are French people mean?

I want to go to France to do an exchange program with my University. I am actually choosing between Spain and France, I speak Spanish already so I'd like to learn a new language (French), but I hear that the French people are very mean, cold, unfriendly. Do they usually tend to warm up once they get to know you? And how do you break that "barrier" with them....
