We wanted to explore more of the Costa so we headed towards Fuengirola, one of the most popular resorts on the Costa del Sol. It is mecca for incoming visitors as it is only a twenty minute drive from Malaga airport.
The region has transformed from a sleepy village in the 60´s to a thriving metropolis of tourism today. There really is something for everyone in this exciting town. The kids will love the beaches that stretch for miles and there is a fantastic open air market. It´s fun to haggle with the stallholders and come away with a bargain or two.
We had previously visited the BIOPARC which was an amazing experience, observing all the different species of exotic animals coexisting in a man-made environment that resembles their own natural habitat. This is one place where you have to make sure you have your camera at the ready, for that unexpected shot which is sure to crop up.
We decided to park near the main promenade by the beach. It is a substantial walkway with some amazing views of the coast. It was nearing sunset as we strolled along the promenade and we were able to get some fabulous camera shots just as the sun was setting.
Receding away from the high rise promenade, Fuengirola’s aged town retains its quaint traditional flavour and the old fisherman’s district of Santa Fe still bustles with Spanish charm. In the distance stands the Moorish castle of Sohail offering spectacular views of the coastline.
Beyond the main square, the Plaza de la Constitution is a network of funky narrow streets that are jam-packed with upmarket tapas bars and stylish cafes. For the family, a mini train runs through the resort providing a short fun tour. Just hop off or on to see many of the attractions en route.
On Avenida de la Encarnacion you will find the new Miramar shopping centre that has restaurants, cafes, and countless modern shops offering fashion goods, sports, leisure, beauty etc. It has a great play area for the kids and also houses the popular “CINESUR” cinema. We hear that they play the odd English movie from time to time.
If you have been to Fuengirola let us know your experience.
