We decided to try the popular “Lobito del Mar” on the Golden Mile in Marbella. We had previously seen opinions and photos of some original dishes so we already knew it was the brainchild of the Michelin starred Chef Dani Garcia. It seemed we were all set for a great dining experience.
We arrived shortly after opening time and were immediately impressed by the appealing terrace and entrance. Inside, each corner of the restaurant had something visually appealing so we hurriedly set up our camera and took some quick snaps.
We had earlier decided to try the tapas on this occasion and return in the future to sample the restaurant cuisine.
We took a seat at the bar area and began to leaf through the tapas menu and soon came up with our choices shown below:
- Cebolleta asada con Romescu y Almendras (Spring onion with Romesco) which is a nut and red pepper-based sauce that originated from Tarragona, Catalonia).
- Tortilla al Whisky para compartir (An omelette cooked in whisky to share).
- Media Lasañita de Buey de Mar (lasagna with crab meat).
- Pimientos del piquillo rellenos de bacalao y su salsa (stuffed peppers filled with cod in its sauce).
- Empanada de Atun Taiyaki (Tuna fish inside of a pastry with Taiyaki sauce).
The reomescu and walnut sauce was genuinely quite nice, but it arrived lukewarm which was a bit of a let-down.
Tortilla al Whisky para compartir. The tortilla seemed average in comparison to others we have tried and it too arrived lukewarm.
Media Lasañita de Buey de Mar. It really did not look like a lasagne, as it lacked body and seemed almost like a sauce with a couple of pieces of pasta. As well as being lukewarm, tiny particles of crab shell found their way to our mouths; a very unpleasant experience.
Pimientos del Piquillo rellenos de bacalao y su salsa: Another tepid dish that tasted quite average.
Empanada de Atun Taiyaki: Amazing presentation for the empanada in the shape of a fish, although it did not taste anything special and was lukewarm.
All in all we were very disappointed with the food. All of the dishes were presented on beautiful dishes to give the impression that the food would be first class, but sadly we were left unimpressed. The only decent experience was the good service from the waiters.
I suppose it could have been an off night but as they say, the place is only as good as its last meal. No doubt we will give it another go in the future and hopefully move on to the full menu.
If you have had a different experience please let us know in the comments.
