A fascinating place to visit is the archaeological remains of the Moorish town of Medina Azahara,” or its pseudonym “Bright City,” as it is sometimes called. You take a bus from Cordoba and ticket reservations can be made from any of the local tourist offices.
We took the bus journey early in the morning with no background knowledge of what to expect. About 20 minutes later we arrived at a stark looking building and parking area.
On the horizon it was possible to make out the remains of this ancient Moorish town. We found out later that it was built around 950 AD; once a jewel in the crown and now a crumbling legacy of myths and legends.
The building mentioned previously was in fact a museum that displayed interesting artefacts from this ancient place; thought to be the capital Al-Andalus.
We went inside and browsed among the ancient remnants; soaking up the history of this once glorious city. By the way, it is from here that you buy your ticket for the shuttle that takes you to the site; only a short drive away. Once on board, the bus shuttled us further up the hill to arrive at the archaic ruins.
It is an imposing scene when you come face to face with this time worn site. A good deal of the aged city is still in a reasonable condition having weathered the storm of time. There are many pathways towards the city as you make your way downhill alongside buildings that were once houses, bathhouses, administrative buildings and more.
Make sure to bring your camera to capture images of the impressive Moorish architecture. A magical unforgettable experience and a must see if you are in Córdoba.
